Synopsis: The Restrictiveness of Living Environment Scale (ROLES) has served since 1992 as the primary way of conceptualizing the “restrictiveness” of a child’s living situation. Changes in youth-serving systems have created a pressing need to revise the ROLES. An instrument for empirically measuring restrictiveness was created. A four-cluster solution of 595 responses produced a simplified typology of “low,” “moderate,” “elevated” and “high” levels of restrictiveness. Results produced an empirically based, meaningful simplified typology of restrictiveness.
