Synopsis: Few pediatricians use screening tools to identify mental health problems because they have questions about whether screening is useful and how it will affect practice. This study found that, compared with providers, screening identified twice as many children with moderate symptoms and 28% more with high symptoms. Screening was particularly helpful during well-child and medical visits and among minority children. Pediatricians will need support from mental health specialists to help manage children identified by screening.
