Synopsis: We examined atypical antipsychotic medication use among children in the 6 months prior to treatment in therapeutic out-of-home care settings. Nearly 51% of children received antipsychotic prescriptions with utilization highest among boys, youth ages 6-12, those with schizophrenia and psychoses diagnoses, and lowest for blacks. Nearly 19% received antipsychotics in all 6 months. Utilization increased over the first five months followed by a decline in the month prior to admission.
