Synopsis: Natural mentoring relationships have been associated with positive outcomes among transitioning youth, yet we know little about the nature of these relationships. This study examined the non-kin natural mentoring relationships among 193 older youth exiting foster care. Youth reported their mentors (e.g., staff at former placement) really know them, are “like the mother I never had,” and provide advice important to successful transition. Understanding these relationships can inform programs geared toward nurturing natural support relationships.
