Synopsis: Medication rates in behaviorally disordered children and youth are high and controversial. Many medications prescribed are off label and pose significant health risks with no available efficacy data. Youth with serious behavioral disorders enter intensive residential programs with high psychotropic medication rates. This study examined medication utilization, aggressive behavior, and restraint rates in two intensive residential treatment programs. The cognitive-behavioral intervention and careful medication management resulted in substantive reductions in both medication rates and behavioral symptoms.
