Synopsis: The 2007 Best Practices for Mental Health in Child Welfare Consensus Conference brought together experts in the fields of child welfare and mental health research, policy and services as well as parent and youth child welfare advocates to discuss the best ways to address the mental health needs of youth in the child welfare system. As a result of the conference, 32 guidelines covering the areas of mental health screening and assessment, psychosocial interventions, psychopharmacological interventions, parent support, and youth empowerment were developed. This discussion will provide a brief overview of the guidelines, their development, and rationale and discuss the implications of the guidelines from the perspective of child welfare agencies and families.
