Synopsis: Estimates of emotional disturbances in children from rural and urban regions are reportedly similar. Yet rural Americans are underserved by mental health professionals. Access to resources should be equitable in both rural and urban communities. Psychological distress and risk factors in boys and girls from rural and urban regions (N = 13,327) were compared. Although, rural and urban youth reported high psychological distress, urban youth reported more risk factors. Implications and future research are highlighted.
