Synopsis: Pediatric primary care providers with mental health skills help reduce racial/ethnic disparities in mental health. In a randomized trial at 13 sites, 58 providers were trained to communicate with families (n = 367) about mental health. After six months, mental health impairment of minority children who visited a trained provider was significantly reduced. Parents of children who visited a trained provider had significant reductions in emotional distress. Communication training reduced disparities in child mental health.
