Synopsis: The concept of a system of care has been talked about since the early 1980’s. In 2004, VNS Community Mental Health Services took over the FRIENDS program in Mott Haven, Bronx, at the request of NYS OMH. We redesigned the program to provide an integrated mental health service for the poor, chronically underserved families in the community. We intend to share our experience along the way to building our own “neighborhood” system of care in the South Bronx.
