Synopsis: Mental health service need among detained youth is a growing issue as more states are forced to examine the care provided to youth detained in juvenile detention settings. This study examines the underlying mental health needs for youths previously identified as having mental illness as well as those not previously identified as mentally ill. Most youth in the study had at least one psychiatric diagnosis, but most had not received prior mental health treatment.
