Synopsis: Responses to recent school shootings and violence often miss the mark in that they do not address the need for "safety from within" or prevention efforts targeting the social, emotional, and behavioral problems that are very often precursors to school attacks. A collaborative project providing school-based services in Springfield, Missouri has directly addressed the concept of Òsafety from withinÓ through the provision of preventative, responsive mental health services in district middle and high schools. The program has decreased discipline referrals and drug and alcohol related offenses and shown improvements in problem severity, hopefulness, and behavioral health functioning.
