Synopsis: This presentation will provide national estimates from the 2005 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), an on-going annual household survey. In the NHIS, parents answered questions about their childÕs use of mental health services and including the use of medication. Approximately 7% of U. S. children 4 to 17 years of age were identified as having ADHD, and 7.4% had learning disabilities. The socio-demographic characteristics of these children and their utilization of mental health services will be described. Mental health services include whether the child had contact with a health provider or school professional, whether he/she ever took prescription medicine, whether he/she took prescription medicine for ADHD, whether he/she received any other type of treatment, and where the child received treatment when he/she received treatment other than medication.
