Synopsis: Emergency room (ER) use by children for behavioral problems can serve as an indicator of overall system quality and the adequacy of community resources. This presentation (1) examines trends in the use of the ER for behavioral health problems in the TennCare program between fiscal years 1996 and 2002 and (2) examines rates of outpatient follow-up care after discharge from the ER. Of particular interest is the role of living in a rural community on observed rates of ER use and post-discharge follow-up.
