Synopsis: This presentation examines psychotropic medication use as youth leave the foster care system. In a study of 406 youth from the foster care system in Missouri, medication use was measured 9 times from age 17 to 19 using the SACA medication module and a life history calendar. Continued medication during the transition out of the foster care was rare: 14% and 18% using two different measures. Young adults who stopped taking medications stopped for a variety of reasons, including the "hassle" of prescriptions and a perception that they were not needed. Affordability was a secondary consideration.
