Synopsis: We use nationally representative data from the 1997 Client/Patient Sample Survey to describe the demographic and clinical profiles of pre-transitional children (0-15 years old), transitional youth (16-25 years old), and post-transitional adults (26-35 years old) in outpatient mental health services in the United States, and to identify correlates of psychotropic medication receipt. Results highlight the unique qualities of transitional youth as well as qualities that are shared with other age groups, confirming and extending our understanding of the complex developmental needs of transitional-aged youth in services. Implications for the design and delivery of services for transitional-aged youth will be discussed.
