Presentation Type: topical discussion

Synopsis: The major purpose of this topical discussion is to continue a national dialogue about the current state of the human services workforce serving children and adolescents with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders across the public child-serving systems. This discussion session will begin with an overview of the context of workforce in children’s mental health and a description of national strategic planning efforts led by the Annapolis Coalition resulting in the development of a National Strategic Plan for the country’s behavioral health workforce. The overall purpose of this National Strategic Plan is to “forge a plan of action to strengthen the behavioral health workforce.” Discussants will also present two environmental scans gathered by the Georgetown National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health and NASMHPD’s Children, Youth and Families Subcommittee on Leadership and Workforce. These scans gathered the perspectives of the states’ children’s mental health authorities as they have had to address workforce challenges in building state service infrastructure (e.g. state training plans, structures and programs, resources, roles, and relationships with institutions of higher education.) Overall findings from the scans will be presented and will then serve as the basis for discussion by participants. Participants will be asked to react to the National Strategic Plan and the scans both from the perspective of their own work with children and families, and from the trends they see in workforce quality. In addition, every participant will be asked to identify practical, action steps that will impact workforce.
