Synopsis: We estimated the overlap among children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in the special education (SE) and public mental health (MH) systems and described their MH service use. In calendar year 2002, 675 children were served for ASD in SE and 418 diagnosed with ASD in MH; 124 received SE and MH services for ASD. Half of children receiving autism SE services were Medicaid eligible; 23.4% used MH services. Seventy percent of children receiving MH services for ASD received SE services through a category other than autism or not at all. Implications for system planning are discussed.
