Synopsis: This presentation sought to stimulate thinking about how cultural competence strategies can contribute to the goal of reducing/eliminating mental health disparities. Nesman and Hernandez shared a framework that can assist sites in developing local strategies to increase access for racially/ethnically diverse populations. Within this framework, emphasis is placed on knowing the community context, including the characteristics of the population to be served, and the level of compatibility between that population and an organization's policies, structures and processes. Practical definitions for key concepts in cultural competence, community context and service delivery are provided.
