Synopsis: As knowledge grows regarding the evidence base underlying appropriate use of medications for psychiatric disorders, changes in health care delivery systems and reimbursement strategies have led to changes in provider types prescribing psychotropic medications to children. This has contributed to changes in patterns of medication use by children, including those with serious emotional disturbance. This study examines variations in prescribing patterns for youth with known mental illness as a function of provider specialty. Results are analyzed by insurance status, cost, diagnosis, service intensity, age, and gender with a focus on disparities in access.
