Synopsis: Given that more children are currently receiving psychotropic medication that ever before, a large sample (N = 7,009) investigation into the relationship between medication usage by children with serious emotional disturbance and child/family demographic, psychosocial and prior service utilization indicators was undertaken. The results from the investigation indicate that in addition to symptomotologic factors (e.g., prior service utilization, suicide attempt), there are also non-clinical child and family factors (e.g., family income, race/ethnicity) that appear significantly related to a child’s history of using medication for emotional and behavioral symptoms. The implications of these findings will be discussed.
