Synopsis: How parents seek help for children with mental health problems has rarely been examined. Parents of 300, 4-17 year olds contacting a children’s mental health centre (CMHC) in Ontario were interviewed. Most often, parents were the ones who first had concerns about their child, and they first sought help from their family physician or a CMHC. The majority of families had ongoing involvement with mental health services over the previous year, yet continued looking for additional services. The reasons for this pattern of diffuse and persistent help-seeking must be examined.
