Synopsis: We surveyed 1,025 caregivers of children with autism about their service experiences. Over 80% of children used services delivered through the mental health system; 41.1% used a psychotropic medication and 79.9% used cognitive or behavioral treatments. Most children engaged in self-injurious or aggressive behavior (77.2%), or had a diagnosis in addition to autism (42.4%) that indicated the need for mental health treatment. Parents (19.7%) and siblings (6.5%) often received counseling. The mental health system is the de facto service provider to families of children with autism, and should increase awareness of the needs of these families and build capacity to meet those needs.
