Synopsis: The objective of this presentation is to describe the movement of youth mental health screening from science to service. The relationship between an evidence-based suicide prevention program, the Columbia University TeenScreen Program, and a national public policy campaign to advance the field of youth suicide prevention will be discussed. This presentation will address both the state and federal governments' efforts to recognize and address the need for mental health check-ups and suicide prevention activities for youth. The nation's first suicide prevention law, the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, and the implications of this on suicide prevention efforts nationwide, will also be discussed.
