Synopsis: Despite the fact that an evidence-based system exists for the diagnosis of mental illnesses, a strikingly large number of children and adolescents with mental health problems remain unidentified and untreated for these problems. Given that virtually all children attend schools and primary care settings, these locations could be prime arenas for identification, but unfortunately, a lack of knowledge and communication persists. Using analyses from four national datasets with over 6000 children, in combination with nationwide input from teachers, parents, and pediatricians, an evidence-based list of warning signs for severe mental illness was created, with attention to language, user-friendliness, and effectiveness.
