Synopsis: This presentation will explore the relationship of risk and protective factors with female adolescent depression in a cohort of 125 daughters whose mothers were receiving TANF. This mixed method longitudinal study has documented the rate of depression among these daughters (as measured by the CES-D scale) has steadily increased from 25% in 2002, to 33% in 2003, to 56% in 2004. These rates greatly exceed the rate of 10 to 15% of youth expected in a general population. The presentation will summarize the risk and protective factors that differentiate daughters screening positive from those who do not.
