Presented at the 18th Annual Research Conference
We're sorry, handouts are not available for this presentation.
Session Number: 17 Room: Salon C & D
Presentation Type: symposium
Chair: Nancy Koroloff Discussant: Michael Epstein
Synopsis: Theory and deployment models on disseminating evidence-based practices pose that research and development on implementation in "real-world" settings must occur in conjunction with research on effectiveness. The current symposium will describe several efforts to facilitate the implementation of high-quality wraparound into communities, including findings from fidelity research, a major wraparound model definition project, and training and coaching curricula development.
Date: Monday, March 7, 2005
Session Time: 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Synopsis: In contrast to interventions that are designed and tested by a single individual or group, wraparound practice has evolved through a process of ongoing innovation by stakeholders across the nation. While this has stimulated a high degree of creativity and flexibility within approaches labeled "wraparound," it has also created difficulty around issues of quality assurance and fidelity. This session reports on the National Wraparound Initiative's efforts to explore and build consensus for wraparound's principles and practice. Results of this study revealed a high degree of consensus regarding the essential activities that comprise wraparound practice. However, interpretation of the principles of wraparound appear to be more controversial. Implications of the study for supporting wraparound practice and future directions for the National Wraparound Initiative will be discussed.

Synopsis: John Burchard's Wraparound Fidelity Index (WFI-3) assesses adherence to principles of the wraparound process through interviews with caregivers, youths, and providers. In this presentation, we present results of analyses of a national WFI-3 dataset of over 700 families from 15 communities, including studies of (1) fidelity scores' change over time, (2) agreement between respondents, (3) how different hypothesized models for wraparound implementation fit with WFI-3 data (using confirmatory factor analysis), and (4) setting fidelity thresholds using the national dataset as well as published evaluation studies using the WFI-3. Implications for interpreting wraparound fidelity data as well as aiding wraparound implementation will be discussed.

Synopsis: Development of training and professional development materials for the wraparound process has traditionally been challenging due to both the complexity of this care management model and the grassroots development of the process, which has led to many variations in approach. The current presentation will describe how the research on the phases and steps of wraparound has impacted development of training and coaching curricula. This presentation will discuss the importance of the developing logic model for wraparound and the use of fidelity measures to guide curriculum revision, coaching, certification protocols, and supervision of wraparound facilitators. Implications for supporting other complex community-based treatment processes will be discussed.
