Empirical Examination of a Parent Empowerment Program in Rural and Urban Communities

We're sorry, handouts are not available for this presentation.

Session Number: 02 Room: Salon B

Presentation Type: symposium

Chair: Kimberly Eaton Hoagwood Discussant: Barbara Friesen

Synopsis: Studies of family involvement in mental health services have identified significant barriers to caregiver access, including lack of knowledge about services, distrust of providers, and lack of self-efficacy in navigating a fragmented and complex service system. A manualized parent empowerment program (PEP), based on the theory-driven model of Bickman and Heflinger and on an empirically-validated engagement program by McKay has been developed in New York State and is being examined in two randomized trials in New York City and in a rural community in Utah. These two studies are examining the impact of PEP in improving knowledge about evidence-based practices (EBPs), improving collaborative skills among advocates and professionals, and increasing service self efficacy and empowerment. The development of the PEP occurred through a collaborative process involving family advocates, state policymakers, and researchers. The development of the manuals, the design of the two studies, and preliminary findings will be presented collaboratively by the advocates and researchers who have designed the studies in tandem.

Synopsis: A manualized parent empowerment program is being examined in a randomized trial through a grant by NIMH. The study will examine the impact of the PEP model on knowledge, collaborative skills, and self-efficacy among a sample of 40 family support specialists randomly assigned to receive the training. A cohort of 180 caregivers receiving services from the family support specialists will be followed prospectively over one year to examine changes in use of services, self-efficacy, and knowledge about EBPs. Development of the manual through a collaborative process and preliminary findings will be presented by the parent advocates and researchers who together designed this study.

Synopsis: This study seeks to test the impact of the Parent Empowerment Program manual in a quality improvement protocol of ADHD treatment provided by primary care physicians in a Utah-based HMO (Intermountain Healthcare). Thirty primary care physicians will be randomly assigned to standard care treatments (Standard Care Only group) or standard care augmented by PEP and a parent-teacher provider communication tool (Standard Care Plus). A cohort of ninety 6-11 year old children newly diagnosed with ADHD will be followed. Information sources for these comparisons will be based on (a) checklists completed by parents as part of a standard assessment package, and (b) notes concerning the physician's treatment procedures and prescribing medication from the child's medical records.
