Synopsis: To provide the first analysis of a cultural syndrome in children, primary caretakers of children in the community and in clinical services in Puerto Rico were interviewed to assess the presence and correlates of ataques de nervios (AdN). Nine percent of children in the community and 26% in the clinical sample reported AdN. Girls were over-represented in the AdN groups in both samples. Family history of AdN and meeting research criteria for a psychiatric disorder were strong predictors of AdN in both groups. AdN are a prominently reported cultural syndrome among children in Puerto Rico, especially among adolescent girls.
