Synopsis: Helping professionals are consistently challenged with engaging and delivering care for children with mental illness. Thirty-nine percent of children scheduled for intake appointments at a clinic serving low-income and minority children were no-shows. Even when ecological and total service delivery approaches are used, the dropout rates range between 26%-29%. By contrast, the MHSPY Program, a voluntary, community-based, culturally proficient, coordinated care model in greater Boston, reports a 3% dropout rate. This paper examines the relationship of innovative engagement techniques with diverse, Medicaid families to success in program retention rates.
