Synopsis: Parents and relative caregivers of children with a serious emotional disturbance (SED) often report high levels of strain. This presentation focuses on (a) exploring differential relationships between dimensions of caregiver strain and demographic characteristics common to many caregiving studies and (b) examining whether caregiver strain, as measured by the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire, is generalizable to groups other than the sample for which it was developed. The impact of caregiver type on strain was examined and comparisons were made among three samples of caregivers: (a) Medicaid parents (n = 648), (b) Medicaid relative caregivers (n = 109), and (c) Military parents (n = 978).
