Synopsis: This presentation will describe a conceptual model of the relationship between pretreatment client factors, therapeutic alliance and outcomes. We will focus on three pretreatment client characteristics: family access to and utilization of social support, caregiver strain, and youth and caregiver expectancies about treatment. A definition of each concept is introduced, followed by discussion of the proposed relationship between these pretreatment client characteristics, the therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes. By addressing these issues from the beginning of therapy, families will be less likely to drop out of and more likely to benefit from treatment. Research, practice, and policy implications are discussed.
