Synopsis: A qualitative study was undertaken to describe parents' experiences in accessing and providers' experiences in delivering mental health services for children. Interviews with seven parents and seven mental health providers, and a focus group of four parents were conducted. Data were analyzed using grounded theory. Parents search for information regarding their child's diagnosis served as a critical mechanism by which parents navigated through various service systems and coped with their child's illness. Parent and clinician differing perspectives regarding the value and utility of diagnosis is discussed in terms of its implications for improving clinician-parent communication and children's mental health services.
