Presented at the 18th Annual Research Conference

Prevalence of Psychiatric Symptoms and Disorders Among Youth in the Juvenile Justice System: Findings from a Multi-State Study

We're sorry, handouts are not available for this presentation.

Session Number: 04 Room: Salon G

Presentation Type: symposium

Chair: Joseph J. Cocozza Discussant: Karen Stern & Gary Blau

Synopsis: This symposium will present the results of a recent multi-state examination of the prevalence of mental health problems among youth in the juvenile justice system, and discuss the implications of these results for future policy and program development. This study, which was undertaken with support from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), included a sample of over 1,400 youth in three states - Louisiana, Texas and Washington. In each state, youth were interviewed in three different levels of care- community-based facilities, juvenile detention centers, and secure juvenile correctional facilities. A series of instruments was used to collect the data including the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument (MAYSI-2), the Voice- Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (V-DISC), youth interviews, case record reviews, facility surveys and family focus groups. This groundbreaking study is the first of its kind to use standardized instruments to examine mental health symptoms and disorder among youth residing in a continuum of juvenile justice facilities in three relatively understudied parts of the country. The symposium will provide an overview of the unique study design, methodology and sample characteristics, as well as a summary of the key prevalence and diagnostic findings, including the MAYSI-2 and V-DISC results. Discussants from OJJDP and CMHS will provide their perspectives on the implications of this study for future policy and program development for the juvenile justice and children's mental health system, including the federally supported systems-of-care communities.

Synopsis: This presentation will describe a comprehensive, multi-state study undertaken to examine the prevalence of mental health problems among a sample of youth in the juvenile justice system. The study included a sample of over 1,400 youth in three states- Louisiana, Texas and Washington. In each state, youth were interviewed in three different levels of care- community-based facilities, juvenile detention centers, and secure juvenile correctional facilities. A series of standardized instruments was used to collect the data. Information will be presented on the design of the study, the instruments used to collect the data, and the characteristics of the youth in the sample.

The Prevalence of Mental Health Symptoms Among Youth in the OJJDP Multi-State Study

Presentation Type: element of symposium

Synopsis: This presentation will describe the prevalence of psychiatric and substance use symptoms among a sample of youth in the juvenile justice system. The sample was drawn from a multi-site study, which was conducted in three states, across three levels of care (secure, detention and community-based facilities), and relied on the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument (MAYSI-2) to identify symptoms. Data will be presented that examine differences in symptomology by race/ethnicity, gender, age and that examine the association between the presence of mental health symptoms and level of penetration in the justice system. Last, the patterns of symptomology identified in this work will be compared to patterns identified in previous works.

Synopsis: This presentation will identify psychiatric diagnoses among a sample of youth exhibiting potential mental health problems. A sub-sample of youth in the juvenile justice system who were screened with the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument (MAYSI-2) were administered the Voice Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-IV (V-DISC IV) to determine alcohol, drug, and mental disorder diagnosis. The sample was drawn from a multi-site study, which was conducted in three states, across three levels of care (secure, detention and community-based facilities). Data will be presented that examine differences in diagnosis by race/ethnicity, gender, age and also examine the association between the presence of disorder and level of penetration in the justice system. The extent to which youth identified by the MAYSI-2 as having potential mental health problems was subsequently diagnosed with a disorder will be presented. Last, the factors associated with specific diagnoses will be compared to patterns identified in previous studies.
