Synopsis: The purpose of this study is to improve understanding of the variation in substance use among youth in treatment for emotional and behavioral disorders. Latent class analysis was used to identify groups of youth treated in federally funded systems of care (n=3149) who shared similar substance abuse indicators. The meaningfulness of the categories was further examined by applying group criteria to a separate sample of youth treated in different service systems (n=493). Difference across groups were tested to examine whether the groups differed in expected ways on demographic characteristics, psychiatric symptomatalogy, social functioning, and service use.
