Synopsis: This study uses an ecological approach to examine the role of family strengths in reducing the risk of substance use involvement among youth with existing emotional and behavioral disorders. Data from two comprehensive mental health services research projects were used to explore the extent to which health family functioning, adequate material resources and few family risk factors protected youth with emotional and behavioral problems from substance use involvement. Findings were compared across samples to assess the generalizability of findings.
