Synopsis: This presentation profiles the youths who were authorized to receive services at various Medicaid-funded levels of care. Demographic characteristics, diagnoses and level of impairment, as measured by the child adolescent functional assessment scale (CAFAS), were examined for: three levels of residential care, crisis support, intensive outpatient services, and outpatient services. Overall impairment corresponded to intensity of service level. In addition, the pattern of scores across the CAFAS subscale domains differed for the levels. It is anticipated that these types of studies can be used to inform the state about the types of programmatic needs that are required for the youths served at the various levels of care.

Synopsis: Over 3,000 Ontario practitioners have achieved inter-rater reliability on the child adolescent functional assessment scale (CAFAS), the outcome measure selected for the province's children's mental health system. Booster training followed initial reliability training at one year in order to maintain clinical skill and assess rater drift. Although reliability improved statistically on 3 subscales and drifted on 4 subscales, 1-year correlations continue to show high inter-rater reliability (.82 to .99). The feasibility of a train-the-trainer approach for establishing reliability among practitioners new to the field demonstrated high correlations for practitioners trained by on-site trainers (.84 to .99) that were comparable to reliabilities for practitioners trained by the provinces' CAFAS training and implementation team (.85 to.99).
