Synopsis: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of strengths and their relationship with outcome for youth receiving inpatient psychiatric and mental health services. As part of a comprehensive outcome evaluation of inpatient services, the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths-Mental Health was completed for approximately 130 youth (6 to 17 years) admitted to a crisis stabilization and assessment unit. Frequency of strengths varied for children and adolescents. Stability of relationships was the most frequent strength for each group. Overall, strengths were independent of acuity of risk at admission and outcome at discharge. The results will be discussed with respect to individual, family and external support factors that predict outcome in at-risk youth.

Synopsis: In July 2002, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services initiated a program entitled System of Care (SOC) to support placement in foster care. In order to support individualized service planning for foster care youth in the SOC program across Illinois, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services utilizes the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) measure. The CANS is a comprehensive instrument designed both to evaluate a youth's risk factors, as well as to distinguish strengths that may be used in treatment. Since its inception, the CANS has yielded data on the needs and strengths of approximately 2000 youth in foster care. The Mental Health Services and Policy Program (MHSPP) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine assists the SOC initiative by retaining and analyzing the data, ultimately providing efficacy appraisals that are integral to the maintenance and improvement of the SOC program.

Synopsis: In January 2000, the Illinois Division of Mental Health established the Mental Health Juvenile Justice (MHJJ) initiative which placed liaisons in all detention centers around the state to identify youth with psychosis or depression and link them to community-based services. This program appears successful at identifying and linking youth and this linkage improves clinical status and reduces the risk of re-arrest. The present analysis focuses on factors that predict clinical and forensic outcomes. Strengths play an important role in predicting both types of outcomes.
