Synopsis: Systematic examination of the services that are involved throughout the period of transition into adulthood (ages 14-25) has been quite limited. What is known is alarming in the lack of services and coordination needed for successful transitions. This symposium sheds new light on these systems including how systems of care serve older and young adolescents differently, how high school's serve youth with severe emotional disturbacne (SED) compared to students with other disabilities, how well one model vocational school program serves youth with SED, and the brideges and barriers between adult and child services in one County.

Synopsis: The presentation will use data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) on a nationally representative sample of secondary school students receiving special education services in the category of emotional disturbance to describe the school-related experiences that prepare students for the transition to adulthood. What students "bring to the table" of their transition experiences will be described, including their functional abilities, prior education-related experiences (e.g., grade retention, suspension/expulsions, school mobility), and criminal justice system involvement. What schools do to serve transition students with emotional disturbances (ED) also will be presented, including course-taking, vocational training, services and supports provided, and transition planning activities.

Synopsis: Past research has detailed the unique needs of youth with serious emotional disturbances in transition to adulthood. This study explores the needs and services received by younger and older adolescents in a traditional system of care. Findings indicated that older adolescents are more likely to receive mental health services through a juvenile justice program and are more likely to have substance abuse problems. The results are discussed in terms of implication to targeting services to adolescents in juvenile justice, and possible gaps in services to transition aged youth in traditional systems of care.
