Synopsis: While many agencies strive for cultural competence in order to provide culturally competent services, there are few systematic approaches to evaluating cultural competence from the perspective of the providers and youth/families. A case example with California’s largest children and family mental health center will illustrate some of the successes and challenges from the providers’ perspective of implementing an organizational cultural competence assessment. The discussion will include the following: Operationalization of the agency’s commitment to cultural competence; description of the process of instrument selection; implementation of the assessment; and future directions.
