Synopsis: Threat and trauma are everyday concerns, following September 11. Earlier, communities struggled with the trauma of violence, death, and disasters. Trauma psychology developed to deal with human responses, but there has been little crossover from the trauma field to children’s mental health. Massachusetts DMH funded Arbour Health Systems-Trauma Center: Community Services Program to respond to youth experiencing trauma. In June 2003, DMH requested a study of program impact and requirements for replication. The study included stakeholder interviews, records review, and a survey of training effectiveness. Results indicated that this innovative program had substantial impact on communities. The training programs were effective in preparing communities and first responders for future trauma events.
