Synopsis: The purpose of this study is to determine the barriers to delivering evidence-based trauma treatment in 'real world' urban settings, and if there are differences between community-based and medical centers in barriers and strategies to involve youth and families in services. Data collected at 7 sites through tracking show rates, administration and service provider observations. Challenges to engagement were identified; however, systematic attention to engagement issues yielded high show rates. The engagement intervention described here represents an important step to supporting 'real world' providers in implementing changes in their practice that are necessary to increase access to youth and their families in need.

A School-based Treatment for Traumatized Children

Download Handouts: 576kb pdf

Session Number: 52 Room: Salon C & D

Presenting: Sheryl Kataoka

All Authors for this paper: Sheryl Kataoka

Presentation Type: part of symposium

Synopsis: This study describes an effective treatment for children exposed to community violence which was developed, implemented, and evaluated through a partnership between school mental health clinicians and academic researchers. Students were randomly assigned to a 10-session group cognitive behavioral therapy intervention or to a waitlist group. Treatment was conducted by trained school-based clinicians on school campuses. Students who received the intervention had significantly lower symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression and lower parent-reported psychosocial problems compared to those on the waitlist. Implications of implementing a manual-based treatment in the school setting will be discussed.
