Synopsis: The purpose of this study was to document the extent of co-occurring psychiatric disorders among a population of treated adolescents identified with substance use disorders in order to inform treatment and policy planning for this population. Existing Medicaid claims/encounter data for fiscal years (FY) 1994 through 2001 were analyzed. Psychiatric disorders were the most prevalent co-morbid condition (48% in FY2001) and increased over time. Types of co-morbid disorders, patterns in the use of primary versus secondary diagnosis, and differential diagnostic patterns by type of substance, gender, and race were also examined. Implications for treatment, research, and policy will be discussed.
